UTAH
COURSE DIRECTORYToana Vista Golf Course
The course is a few miles from the Utah border. Follow
Wendover Boulevard west, past all the casinos and follow the sign
by the supermarket. One important word of warning for readers
- obey the posted speed limits, signs and signals in the casino
district! There have been several auto-pedestrian accidents
on this street and the speed is now vigorously enforced.
Follow this one rule and you can have a very good time in Wendover.
Toana Vista has just completed construction of a new clubhouse
and snack bar facility. The pro shop is headed by PGA Professional
Reid Goodliffe who is a Brigham City, UT native. Players
will now find a complete stock of golf equipment and clothing
available.
Reid says that besides the the Utah crowd a lot of golfers are just stopping through on trips from other states and Canada who want to play something different. Something different is exactly what Toana Vista provides.
The natural desert in Wendover consists of rock and hard soil
in which only sagebrush can survive. This is the rugged terrain
through which Toana Vista's narrow fairways snake toward small,
mounded and well bunkered greens. Add to the mix several
strategically placed water hazards and the over achieving desert
wind and Toana Vista can be a score destroyer. But it sure
is a lot of fun!
The secret to playing a good round is to keep it on the grass -- any grass. Off the fairway the natural desert rough is hard soil and rock. If you don't want to scratch your new irons then you had better bring rock clubs (or a foot wedge). Be prepared as most players will be required to hit a variety of long and shot shots from the hardpan rough. Also, be careful when searching for balls in the natural rough areas! Although the native population has been relocated, an occasional rattlesnake could make its way on to the course.
There are many memorable holes at Toana Vista. Number 11 has the most intimidating tee shot on the course. It's a downhill par 3 of only 159-185 yards but the swirling winds will deposit miss hit balls into the large pond fronting the green.
The par 5 hole number 12 offers the best risk-reward shot.
A well driven tee ball will give the player the reward of going
for the green in two. The risk is that the shot must carry
the length of a water hazard lined with railroad ties. No
second chances if the ball's short - it will either make the green
or bounce off the planks into the water.
Finally, beware the hidden water hazard on number 14! There is a pond in the left corner of the hole that can be hidden from the tee box. It is very reachable so stay right.
Are you tired of the same old track with the all too familiar
inch and a half grass rough? It's time to get out to Toana
Vista and put some new scratches on those clubs!
