Many members feel the playing season might be much longer than some have thought because of the exposed nature of the site. Being exposed means sunlight can reach it and melt the snow in shoulder seasons. Weather was another thing on Nicklaus' mind.
"In every golf course I build, I want it to yield to good play when the conditions are perfect," Nicklaus said. "A course that plays hard under perfect conditions will be impossible to play when the conditions are less than perfect. I think Pebble Beach is like that. If the weather is perfect, it's an easy golf course. If the conditions are hard, the golf course is hard but not impossible. I think we have accomplished that here.
"I think the first 10 holes are fairly easy and even though the bunkers are very deep on some holes, a lot of times they are functional, defining the target and not penal," he said.
Located in the Vail Valley, Cordillera encompasses more than 6,500 acres, with more than 50 percent of the property is designated as open space. Cordillera's three other golf courses include the award-winning Valley Course by Tom Fazio, The Mountain Course by Hale Irwin and The Short Course by Dave Pelz.

Ford's Praise
President Ford praised Nicklaus for his support of the Vail Valley throughout the years.
"For 20 years we held the Jerry Ford Invitational Tournament in the Vail Valley (1967-87) and Jack came every year," President Ford said. "The first year he won the tournament and immediately endorsed the $5,000 check back to our foundation."
Ford, a long-time resident of the Vail Valley can remember when there were only four golf courses to pick from. Now he can pick from 19.
Nicklaus
In Colorado
Nicklaus has designed nine golf courses in Colorado. The most well-known is Castle Pines Golf Club, site of the PGA Tour's International. He must have a special place in his heart for Basalt's Roaring Fork Club, a private layout, because he has a million-dollar home there. Others include the Country Club of the Rockies in Vail, Country Club at Castle Pines, Aspen Glen Golf Club in Carbondale, Breckenridge Golf Club, Meridian Golf Club in Englewood and Ptarmigan Golf Club in Fort Collins.
Nicklaus' list of most visited states with his designs are Florida 17, Arizona 11, California 10 and Colorado 9. His ever-changing total of designs hit 186 with the Cordillera gem.

The Summit is irrigated by a water line that came 4.5 miles from the Eagle River.

Of the more than 17,000 golf courses in the USA only three are at a higher elevation than The Summit.

Where to Dine
Grouse-on-the-Green is an authentic Irish pub-style restaurant at the Short Course. The interior was designed and built in Ireland, then shipped to Cordillera for installation. Authentic to the core, it not only has the ambiance of a traditional pub, it has a menu that includes shepherd's pies, pasties and fish and chips.
Restaurant Picasso is Cordillera's formal restaurant at The Lodge and features light interpretations of European fare. The Timber Hearth Grille, located in The Clubhouse at the Mountain Course, offers American cuisine with a Southwestern flair. The Chaparral Steakhouse is located at the Valley Course.

Directions to The Lodge
It's 17 miles west of Vail. Take exit 163 from I-70 to Highway 6. Turn right and go west from Edwards for 2.7 miles. Turn left or south on Squaw Creek Road. Cordillera's entrance is a left turn. To get to the Mountain and Summit Courses keep going straight up the mountain and follow the signs.
The Valley Course is located on the opposite side of I-70. Take the Edwards exit, No. 163, turn right, then almost immediately back left leading west for two miles to Legends Drive. The clubhouse is located on the left.

Course at Cordillera: Nicklaus' Newest Colorado
It was Nicklaus' only drive of the day with the club. He autographed it and gave it to club officials for display in the clubhouse. Then he proceeded to fire a 4-under-par 68, registering an opening-day course record.
Perhaps most enjoyable part for the fans was the fact Nicklaus nixed any ideas about being surrounded by ropes walking the fairways. Any fan could walk with Nicklaus and chat with him.
"When we first started talking about moving dirt, we thought 600 tons would do it," Nicklaus said. "When we finished, we had moved less than 175. We wanted to do as little as possible and use the trees and the environment to our advantage."
