Exceeded expectations

Fun course, pretty good condition. It gets windy so hit them low.

Fun round on a surprisingly out of the way course

We were pleasantly surprised with our round at Purple Sage in Evanston, Wyoming. As we continue our goal to play at least once in every state we chose this course mostly for the convenience of our travel itinerary. We have usually tried to play courses listed high in state rankings by the golf magazines and Purple Sage was not on the list but we took the chance anyway. We are glad we did.
The course was very well maintained and in excellent shape. The greens were extremely good to putt on. Very true and quick and took a few holes to adjust to them.
The fairways were wide and forgiving but if you got into the wispy rough then take your medicine and get it back in play. A very good use of the topography allowed them to utilize elevation changes and add to the beauty of the course. The wind is a major player and defends the course quite well especially on the higher elevated holes.
Overall a fun day of golf for us followed by a very good lunch in the clubhouse. When we checked into our hotel it was even suggested by the front desk that the course restaurant was an excellent choice for dinner. We would recommend playing Purple Sage if for whatever reason you find yourself in southwest Wyoming or nearby areas of Utah.

UP and Down

Only had time for 9 holes.2 groups had just gone off the first hole so Pro shop mgr asked if we wanted to play back instead of waiting. We gladly played back. Very hilly and 30+' elevation change on a few holes. 3-3's, 3-4's + 3-5's. Most holes were down wind or dead into wind. Only flat holes were par 3's. Glad we took a cart, big hikes between holes and elevation change too.
I'm guessing it is usually windy, Had a special price to pay, $1 / hole playing.

Locals Ought to be Proud of Their Golf Course

I thoroughly enjoyed Purple Sage. Make no mistake, it is not a resort, but it is apparent that a lot of hard work goes into maintaining this course. The front nine (original) is rather mundane and wide open, but things change on #9. Severe elevation changes, and clever usage of the natural terrain make the final 10 holes a challenge. Add some wind, which is the norm, and they are downright tough. It was heartening to see a large junior clinic in progress when I arrived. Kudos to the course for being such a positive contributor to this small rural community.
