Valley View Golf Course in Layton offers a fun and challenging championship course for an affordable price. The course's name refers of course to the Salt Lake Valley, which it offers nice views of, but there are also scenic vistas of the Wasatch Mountains. The large greens are rolling and fast and there are crosscut fairways. There are four sets of tees, many of which are elevated. In addition to the many water hazards and bunkers present on the course there are also several sidehill lies. Both the front and back nines have an interesting and varied mix of holes.

One of the best courses in the Salt Lake Area

I have played Valley View for many years and always from the tips with it's 74.1 course rating, it is difficult. I didn't put "Extremely Difficult" because compared to a course like Spyglass Hill, for instance, it isn't as difficult but it is a great challenge with hilly lies, long holes, and very fast greens. For a municipal course, it is the best around. Some years ago there was a very bad wind storm and they ended up having to cut down dozens of towering dogwoods that really shaped many of the holes...so that is a bummer. I wish they would plant some replacement trees in those locations for future generations.

Just Setting the Story Straight

Valley View is the best course in Northern Utah, if you value a public course that’s demanding and we’ll kept. I’ve played golf here for the last 25 years and have a single digit handicap. The course is always in good condition and has a variety of tees. Biggest complaint I’d have is if you are not an adequate golfer, don’t come here. The golf course is long and tough. The greens afford it another level of protection. Since it’s a public course I see too many people that are beginners and shouldn’t be trying to start here. The course has a great practice area. Again best in the area unless you go to Oakridge Country Club and the professional staff is top notch. As a public course you sometimes get others behind the desk (prior complaint). Bottom line is if you want to play a great course, this is it. And yes, if you go into the restroom it still has the Jack Nicklas wallpaper from 20 years ago. Bathrooms are 20 years behind from a remodel, it makes me laugh every time. However, I don’t go for the guy at the front desk or the bathroom. And if you can’t play 18 holes in 4-4 1/2 hours, don’t repair your ball marks and aren’t nice, please don’t visit. There are enough of those types at other public courses.

Rude guy at the desk

I played this course a few times last year and it was a good experience. I recently moved to the area and tried to ask the nan behind the desk about their Men's Club and he was not very forthcoming with information. I had planned to make this my home course but his attitude pretty much turned me off to the idea. I thought maybe it was a fluke but then I went back again the next day and he was once again behind the desk with the same demeanor. Probably not the guy I would have behind the desk at my golf course if I was running it. I will be taking my membership and my four day a week golf habit to another course

Not the Valley View I have played in the past... What happened?

We had a vendor in from CO and I told him UT has really great high quality golf for less $ than CO and that Valley View is one of the best courses around(top 100 public courses in the 90's). I have not played Valley View in about 1-2 years. I have always thought Valley View and Bountiful Ridge were by far the two nicest courses north of SLC. I have always even thought Valley View had a better layout. I was surprised, but the fact is , I was embarrassed after the round. This was not the Valley View I have played in years past. Has ownership, management, or investment changed?
The course appeared to be neglected regarding the conditions. Course was much dryer than I expected even with our dry summer based on past dry summers and current status of other local courses. Greens were very very slow and dry. Water features were either empty and smelled of drying mud or seemed like they were not being circulated and were full of algae and scum. Cart paths are very very rough and in need of repair on some holes such as 8 and 16. Multiple places on the course I saw places where work was being done on the irrigation system with small holes and dirt piles visible. Bathrooms in the club house were not dirty but also not as well kept as they have been in years past. Downstairs of club house seemed cluttered like it was not a public area.
I am hopeful that what I experienced will not be Valley View going forward. Based on the current status of the course I would only rank Valley View as just another average course for the area. I rated the course Poor on this review based on what the course has been over the past 20 years I have played it. I can only hope some good can come of this review. I cant wait to come back and play the old Valley View.

Great Course

My favorite course around the Salt Lake area. Very challenging especially from the tips - hard to find some of the tee boxes (tips) if you haven't played before. No two holes alike, greens can have a lot of break - stay below the hole. As has been mentioned it can be slow - especially on weekend before noon (it's a tough track) and I agree the staff isn't always the most pleasant, but I over look that because the course is a great test, if you score well here you've played a great round of golf. Usually in very good condition. I think Golf (or Digest) magazine had this a one of the best courses under $50 years ago. Low handicap golfers will tell you this is one of the best muni courses in Salt Lake area.

Worst customer service imaginable

Sincerely the worst customer experience I've ever had at a golf course. Terrible customer service, terrible attitude, shameful excuses and justifications for unacceptable golf etiquette. If I could give ZERO stars I would.
Played 9-holes in 3 hours and 20 minutes, waiting on EVERY. SINGLE. SHOT for the group in front of me. Called the clubhouse after 3 holes to alert them, and they DIDN'T DO A THING. When I finished, and asked for a refund based on the time it took to complete the round, the professional (I use the term as his status with the PGA, not his customer service skills) and assistant professional (again - status with the PGA) were very combative and disrespectful. At one point the assistant professional stated the group in front of me finished 40 MINUTES after the group in front of them. They played a 5 hour and 10 minute round of golf. Neither the professional or assistant professional acknowledged any kind of issue with a group of golfers playing in that amount of time, or finishing 40 minutes behind the group in front of them. I won't return to this golf course.

Challenging and Beautiful

Difficult but beautiful course. Usually in great condition. Frequently see deer and other wildlife while playing. Very hilly - tiring to walk unless you're in very good physical condition.
