Reviews
Good course to play
I played the front 9 holes. We had to wait on every hole, contributing to a 2-hour round. But I enjoyed playing with my best friend. Beautiful corse.
Turning Around
I played this course when it first opened. It has completely changed and matured. Fun holes and enjoyable course for any golfer. Keep working on the course conditions and in a couple years this will be a course that you have to visit..
Time to go
Most reviews here are old. This place has turned over a new leaf. New carts. New mowers. Less rough. New grill. New ladies bathroom. Halfway hut open for snacks and drinks. New sand in traps. Grass on driving range, not dirt. Links style layout with interesting holes and great views. Fairways and greens have come back. Go play before it gets too busy. You won't be sorry.
Potentially a Great Course
Sun Hills is potentially one of the most interesting courses the area. It has an interesting layout, and although it plays a little short, there are some challenging holes and the ability to make it longer by changing several of the tee boxes. I have played there several times and each time I feel the greens keeper is holding this place back. I understand he does not play golf. This is a HUGE minus in actually taking care of a course for golfers. I'm sure from his experience he can do certain things well, but without a commitment to the game and the course, it will not get better. Greens keepers must work long hours as a labor of love, not a job where you have weekends off. Also, with the shorter season, it should not be a problem. Only if it was supported more by the investors. Let's hope it gets a new owner soon so we can all enjoy this potential gem!
WOW!
I left the course feeling like somehow my round was taken from me. It looks nice from the clubhouse, and even the clubhouse was a pretty normal scene. I was a tad concerned about how empty the lot was however. But wrote that off to the hard to find location. Prices were pretty average for this area, and the staff seemed nice enough. They had a snack bar, range, practice greens (no practice bunker). Overall not bad, even if a tad smaller than most. Out on the course was a whole other issue. It had playability in the layout, but the conditions.....YIKES! The greens were hands down the worst. I would say 20% of almost every green looked to be molding, and was missing grass. This didn't seem to deter them from placing flags next to the bad areas either. Bunkers were full of cat litter type, hard sand. Mold in the fairways near the greens as well. Speaking of fairways, they were really narrow. Decent room in between the longer rough, but hard to really tell a difference between the normal rough and the fairways. They obviously had not cut in several days. Greens were also slower than I would say is normal. Tee boxes were really long. They tried to add some appeal to the fairways with this curvy layout, but it still struck me as odd that they were all super narrow, and all just straight lines. Never did spot any maint. crew through the round which wasn't a bad thing, but started to make sense. Spotted the Maint shed on like hole 6 I think, and looked pretty closed up and a fairly early time in the day. I'd say they either have a missing greens keeper and are in need of hiring one, meenwhile having only somewhat knowledgeable crew members, perhaps even small crew. Or they have a greens keeper that is older, maybe too old, or super Lazy and checked out for some other job or something. It felt like municipal course in like a small town far away form everything. I can say this for sure, with the course in that bad of shape, it was not worth the 40$ spent. Would not recommend until they have someone in there that actually knows to to manage a golf course, and can get their Conditions out on the actual course figured out. Who knows maybe they already have a Maint person, and was left with all the mess from their last one. IDK, but like I said, Wow that was hard to see a course in that bad of shape.
You hit the nail on the head! Could be a nice place, but ground maintenance is the worst I have seen! I have asked around and your assumption about the maintenance shed being closed early is correct. The greens keeper and the crew is usually gone by 2:00PM and they start at about 6:00AM. Weekends are worse, there are only one or two maintenance people around and the greens keeper is rarely there. Maybe he needs to get a job in a bank. I wonder what he writes in his W2 form for profession... Is sure is not Greens Keeper!!!
Yeah... the Greens Keeper has been there for over 12 years and he still can't get it right.
Forgiving Links Course
I really enjoyed playing here this morning. The windy hills added a little extra challenge to this not-too-long course. The fairways are relatively wide and forgiving. The greens were deceptively fast. We played in the morning while everything felt spongy, but the greens were still quick. You play up and down a few of the foothills on about half the holes and I enjoyed the elevation changes. Most greens are well bunkered, but offer a decent risk/reward if you can avoid them. The multi-tiered greens also offer a nice challenge if you end up on the wrong side of the pin. I would recommend this course if you are looking for something not too difficult, but with some fair challenges. No opinion about the clubhouse or snack bar, I didn't spend much time there.
Greens and general overall conditions
I have been playing Sun Hills since opening day in 1995. The greens are in the worst conditions that they have ever been. The superintendent of golf course in 1995 until he was replaced was doing a great job. He had a degree from Utah State and was very good at his job. In my opinion the only way to resolve the greens and overall condition of the course is to water more and get a superintend THAT KNOWS WHAT A SUPERTINENT'S JOB IS TO ENSURE THAT THE GOLF COURSE IS IN GOOD SHAPE AND FUN TO PLAY.!!!!!!!!!!!!
The greens keeper with the degree )associate) is the same one that has been there for over 12 years!!! That guy is the problem with the course. He doesn't even play golf!!!
Surprisingly challenging!
Located right near Hill AFB, the staff was accommodating and friendly. Course has a good mix of open fairways, hazards, and blind shots. Greens were fast and well manicured. tee boxes were in decent shape. Course isn't the best for long hitters as it is relatively short. Great views of the surrounding mountains!
Sun Hills
Golf course was in fair conditions. Greens were really ruff with a lot of marks. Course was really soft do to the rain but played good. Hit in ruff and you will pay the price if you can find your ball. There was no good available which was a downer. Driving range needs to be improved, just hitting ball in a field can't really judge distances do to rough terrain you hit into.
Fun for a good deal
The course is a lot of fun for a mixed skills group. I felt the par 4s were a little bland and it seemed like they were all the same length. But the par 3s as 5s are fun and the course is in great shape. I was not dissapointed!
P.s. Please get a real snack bar! We would have dropped another. $40 easily on food,, any 18 hole course NEEDS a grill!
Sun Hills great location
Had a great time, speed of play, variety of holes, condition of greens were all in great shape, made for an overall great experience.
Elevated Tee Box Heaven
If you are looking for something that you can "tee it high and let it fly" this is the course. Lots of fun but slightly difficult.
Great Condition
This was a fun round of golf with my son-in-law, who hasn't golfed much. I shot one of my best rounds ever and he had fun because it was fairly open with small trees, therefore he could find his ball when he hit in the rough.
Nice track
This course has a a lot of different elevations and some challenge to know where to hit the ball. Beautiful views of the mountains and the Great Salt Lake, and you will definitely be distracted by the Air Force jets buzzing over your head as you play; (next to Hill Air Force Base), however I found them to be a spectacular distraction.
Great course
First time playing this course and booked a hot deal at 11:54a. Surprisingly enough, the course was in great condition and although it was opened, we had 15-20 mph winds which gave some great challenges as well as helped on the nice long drives.
Windy day
Course was in good condition. Pace of play was slow.
fun golf course with good views of area
Golf course with several elevation changes. Several dog legs where you are not sure where the green is. greens were a little slow and could have rolled better but was ok. plays about 6300 yards.
This review is too good to be true. I have been going to Sun Hills for many years and I do not believe this review, as I have not experienced these enhancements. Yes, there is a new snack bar and sand in the bunkers, but everything else...?
