Fun course with elevated tees and pretty views.
This is a fun course for experienced players. Almost every hole has an elevated tee and a large bowl-shaped green. There are lots of deep bunkers and water hazards. If you're hitting good drives and avoiding the hazards, you'll really enjoy your round.
Great layout in great shape
Got a perfect tee time at a nice Golf Now discount. Staff was very helpful/friendly. Course was not busy. This is a really well-designed course. The front is challenging with narrow fairways and some blind shots. Canyons and vertical relief are stunning on this nine. Back nine was similar with less mountain effect. Suggest you play blue or gold tees unless you're a real notice (try white) or expert (you deserve black tees). Fairways is wonderful condition. Greens rolled true but rather fast
Above average
Course has an excellent layout & has incredible scenery. General course conditions is adequate however the 2 days we played the course was extremely wet & over watered. Despite no rain balls that landed in the fairway got no roll & were constantly muddy. There were multiple cart ruts in the fairways. Overall condition would of been excellent except for the over watering of the fairways. For the difficulty of the course pace of play was excellent. Overall the experience was above average.
very scenic and challenging course
Staff is very friendly, greens were in great shape.
Great mountain course.
I would play here again. The course was a fabulous mountain course.
Enjoyed it
Empty course on a Saturday, pro shop very welcoming. Mary at snack bar friendly and helpful.
Course in good condition. GPS available on carts, but only text, no picture or diagram. Most of the holes are blind shots, dog legs or over trash so a layout would help.
Lakota Canyon Ranch Golf Club
Lakota Canyon was in excellent condition. The tees, fairways, traps, and greens were in fantastic condition. I have played this course many times and it is in the best condition since I've been playing it. The exterior esthetics of the golf shop and grill are not the most appealing, but then we were more interested in playing golf than spending time in the club house.
Beautiful, challenging course
Beautiful views and immaculate conditions with a very friendly staff. No 2 holes look the same. Course winds through small canyons, especially on the front 9. Lots of elevation changes. The valley has a definite pull on the putts, so factor it in.
Fun Mountain Course
The scenery was beautiful, not a lot of people playing the day I played which made play steady. I like this course.
the course has sme very challenging holes
I really liked all the elevated tees. The views were great. Most of the greens are in a bowl and it is very steep getting down to the greens. Overall it was a very enjoyable round and I would definitely like to play it again.
Amazing views and challenging golf!!
I played this bad-boy from the tips. Wow! This is a challenging but BEAUTIFUL course!
Staff was cordial but not super friendly.
If I am ever in this area I will play here again for sure!
Peaceful, beautiful and forgiving mountain course.
Here's Jim Engh designed roller coaster course you need to try. I rank Lakota Canyon Ranch super high on the "fun factor". Some golf purest would criticize the valley fairways and bowl shaped greens as being too forgiving but for the recreational golfer looking for an exciting round with fantastic vistas and lots of elevated tee shots this course is definitely a "must play" for you.
I've been hosting a group to play LCR almost every year for 7 years. This is their favorite mountain course. We'll play it again Aug 20, 2013.
The front nine is a beautiful and exciting climb up into the mountains just south of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. This nine includes three classic par 5s with seriously elevated tee shots, valley fairways and stadium-style partial bowl greens. Pay close attention to the pin positions and the opportunity to use back stops and side wall bounces when hitting your approach shots to all the Lakota Canyon Ranch greens. The three par 3s on the front nine border on being too tricked up with severe slopes #especially the 9th hole# that you may love or hate depending on the kick and roll you receive on your tee shot.
The back nine is a little more traditional while still showing many signs of Jim Engh's design style. The par 5 18th is Lakota Canyon Ranch's signature hole and it's a classic risk/reward beauty. If you hit a big drive near the end of the first fairway go for the green in two but don't let that shot stray to the right or you're dead. The safer shot is to lay up to the second fairway to your right then hit the shallow green with a good backstop with a lofted iron and one putt for a memorable finishing birdie.
Enjoy food and drink out on the sunny deck of the modest clubhouse while you watch other golfers struggle with their decision making and shot execution well below you on that 18th hole.
Spectacular views
Great conditions and views. Don't expect elaborate club house but the course is the feature. Early tees times, spring in Colorado expect afternoon thunder showers. You always know the course designer has elevations for you.
Sadly, this great course has fallen into a state of disrepair.
Budget cuts have clearly taken its toll on this great track that recently made Golf Magazine's top 100 you can play list. It was early season, but it appears that not a dime had been spent on even the most basic course maintenance yet. No bunkers had been raked, and the fairways were littered with deer feces and hadn't even seen a mower or a rake yet, rendering some of them nearly unplayable. Most fairways are also still scarred from prior year's installation of new drainage, and the concrete paths are cracked and some have shifted to the point that they are nearly impossible to navigate with a cart. The greens were good, although the winter ropes, which did interfere with play, were still up to prevent further wildlife damage. There are many other courses in the area that are in much better shape right now that don't charge nearly as much. This impressive layout in a spectacular setting is in desparate need of TLC.
I've updated this review. The old clubhouse has been replaced with a beauty and pace of play has improved.
Lakota Canyon Ranch is now part of Warrior Golf and that seems to be an improvement for them.
