CU Women's
Golfers Finish 10th in San Jose

TravelGolf.com Staff Report SALINAS, Calif. (MARCH 8, 2001) - The University of Colorado women's golf team finished in 10th place here Wednesday as the San Jose Spartan Invitational came to a close.

No. 8 New Mexico State led from wire-to-wire in winning with an 869 team score, but the Aggies held off a late charge from No. 11 Pepperdine, as the Waves shot the best team round of the tournament in the final round (283) to pull to within one in the final standings.

Colorado finished 10th with a 925 total, as the Buffaloes closed with a final round 303, but earned important wins over four district rivals: Washington State, Oregon State, Brigham Young and Hawaii. This was one of the toughest fields of the young season, as six teams were ranked in the top 20 and nine in the top 48 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings (the first spring poll also came out Wednesday).

Washington's Kelli Kamimura shot a final round 66 to claim medalist honors with a 74-69-66-209 scorecard, as she defeated Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright by two strokes. Sophomores Erin Kerr and Jolene Fellhauer paced CU as the duo tied for 37th overall with 230 totals; Fellhauer carded a 75 and Kerr a 79 in the final round on the 5,938-yard, par-72 Corral de Tierra Country Club course, with senior Katy Nolan recording a 40-39-79.

"The girls played great, and as the conditions improved and we played better," assistant coach Linda Sue Linton said. "We wanted to break 305, and we did that because the girls worked together and pulled in some good scores. They really hung in there all week, overcoming the rain and held their own against a tough field.

We did well against schools we needed to, especially Oregon State and Washington State, teams we need to beat to get to the regional. So overall, they did great and proved that they could play with them." Heavy rains delayed the start of the tournament Monday, and the course finally dried out for the final round.

Linton subbed for CU head coach Anne Kelly, who is missing the meet as she is recovering from a minor health issue; she'll return in time for the team' s next meet.

CU will return to action in two weeks, as the Buffaloes will play in the Hawaii Wahine Invitational during spring break.
