Head Coach Anne Kelly Signs Second Phoenix Product In As Many
Years
BOULDER, Colo. (APRIL 18, 2001) - University of Colorado head women's golf coach Anne Kelly has penned Phoenix, Ariz. native and Shadow Mountain prep player Joey Stetser to a National Letter of Intent to attend CU in the fall of 2001. Stester is Kelly's second Phoenix product in as many years as she will join junior-to-be Erin Kerr on next year's roster. "Phoenix is a very strong area for junior and high school players with its junior golf programs. It's a great recruiting area for us. It gives student-athletes the opportunity of being away at college with the advantage of having a short trip home. With our tournament in Tucson, it also gives players to go home once a year and play in front of friends and family." Stetser completes Kelly's recruiting class and joins Margaret Garehime (Englewood, Colo.) and Allison Rella of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada who signed with CU during the early signing period in November. JOEY STETSER, 5-9, Freshman, Phoenix, Ariz. (Shadow Mountain) The No. 2 ranked prep player in the state of Arizona, Stetser is an All-Desert Valley Region and All-State selection following the 2000 state tournament. This summer Stetser was a contestant in the 2000 Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines and was also the PGA Southwest Section Championship medallist with a 147 effort on the Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott, Ariz. A second-team All-Desert Valley Region and All-State performer as a junior, she played to six first-place finishes in dual matches and was the first-place individual representative in the Arizona State Tournament. She had a pair of runner-up efforts in dual matches in '99 as well as three additional top-10 finishes including a ninth-place finish in the regional tournament.
As a sophomore, she finished 32nd in the Arizona State Tournament and was a Bronze Academic Award winner at Shadow Mountain. A multi-sport athlete, Stetser was also a four-year letterwinner, playing the off-guard position, on Shadow Mountain's Girls' Basketball Team that advanced to the Arizona State Final Four her freshman season. During the spring season she lettered in track, running the short hurdles. She chose Colorado after campus visits to Big 12 rivals Kansas and Baylor. Personal: Joey Lynn Stetser was born Nov. 29, 1982 in Phoenix. She is the youngest of Linda and Joe Stetser's two children. Her older brother Jarred attends the University of Arizona. Stetser's maternal grandfather, Jack Godwin is a Boulder native whose parents owned the property currently known as "The Sink" on the University Hill and lived in housing above the restaurant. Godwin graduated from Boulder High School and attended Colorado in the pre-war era. In The Classroom: Stetser carries a 3.5 grade point average and is currently in the top-25 percent of her Shadow Mountain graduating class of 2001. She is interested in studying medicine and has plans of pursuing a career in oncology or physical therapy. Kelly on Stetser "I think Joey will add to an extremely strong freshman class. She is a talented, all-round athlete that will bring a strong work ethic to the team. She's someone that is interested in improving her game and taking it to the next level. That being said, she will have a successful collegiate career." |
