Bellinger Shoots Second-Day 75-80 For Top-10 Finish

ST. GEORGES, Utah (APRIL 11, 2001) -The University of Colorado women's golf team blistered a second-round 303 and was in third place after 36 holes before unseasonable winds blew in during the third round forcing tough play and a final round 329 to finish seventh on the par-72 Sunbrook Golf Course here today.

The seventh-place effort is Colorado's best in four attempts at this tournament since 1997 and the Buffs' three round score of 942 is also a program tournament best. Sarah Bellinger's three round 232 total put the senior in a four-way tie for ninth, her second top-10 finish of the year.

"It was inspiring to have such a huge comeback in the second round just to see it literally blow away in the third," said head coach Anne Kelly. "The course that helped us yesterday, Woodbridge, was the one that hurt us today," said Kelly of the third round.

San Francisco maintained its lead and took team honors shooting a two-day 918, a 15 stroke lead over runner-up and host BYU (933) and Idaho. Northern Arizona's Hanna-RiikkaKuitunen (72-80-74) and BYU's Carrie Summerhays (76-73-77) claimed co-medalist honors with a three-round 226 total.

With a 613 score after the second round, Colorado only trailed San Francisco (601) and Idaho (612) before the winds kicked in forcing a 328 average third round for the entire 18 team field. The only six teams that broke 320 in the final round were the teams that finished ahead of the Buffs.

Senior experience was the key to today's second and third rounds. While Erin Kerr, Colorado's leader after 18, shot a second round 74, she was tripped up by the weather in the third and shot an 87 to finish tied for 27th.

Senior co-captains Katy Nolan and Sarah Bellinger shaved five and two strokes off their first round scores and held the top two scoring rounds towards the team's finish with a 79 and 80, respectively, on the final 18. Jo Pritchard contributed solid second (77) and third (83) rounds and was the Buffs' final scorer.

Jolene Fellhauer succumbed to the conditions carding an 81 and 89 today, Brooke VanWyk, playing as CU's lone individual, shot a consistent 83-83.

The Buffs will have a 13-day break before they conclude the regular season at the fifth annual Big 12 Championships, April 23-25 in Ames, Iowa.

"We're going to give this tournament all we've got. It's now or never as it's the last chance we have to advance to regionals."
