Saddle Rocks McCleary Honored for Environmental Efforts
AURORA, CO (March 29, 2001) --- Joe McCleary, Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) of Saddle Rock Golf Course, Aurora, Colorado, was recently named the winner of the 2001 National Public Golf Course Environmental Steward Award. The Environmental Steward Award recognizes golf course superintendents for overall course management excellence in the areas of technology use, resource conservation, water quality management, integrated pest management, wildlife/habitat management and education/outreach.
The award is given by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and sponsored by Syngenta Professional Products, Rain Bird, Textron Golf, Turf & Specialty Products and Pursell Technologies Inc. Additionally, the sponsors donated $500 to the GCSAA Foundation in Joe McClearys name.
The Environmental Steward Award speaks to the commitment and the professionalism of the golf course superintendent, said R. Scott Woodhead, GCSAA president. The terms golf and environmental stewardship were in the past thought to be incompatible. Today, we know that is no longer the case.
Under McClearys leadership, Saddle Rock Golf Course has become known locally and nationally for their environmental excellence, and this award is a culmination of those efforts. Saddle Rock Golf Course has also achieved the prestigious designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), the educational division of Audubon International, endorsed by the United States Golf Association.
Joe McCleary and his staff have done a tremendous job both during construction and managing Saddle Rock Golf Course, says Dennis Lyon, Manager of Golf for the City of Aurora. Joe has placed significant concern for the environment throughout the process. He and his staff truly deserve this great honor and we in the City are very proud of this accomplishment.
McCleary, a ten-year veteran of the Aurora Golf Division, says, The Environmental Steward Award is a tribute to a dedicated Saddle Rock staff and the environmental efforts contributed throughout the design, construction, and operation of the golf course."
Saddle Rock Golf Course has enjoyed many local and national awards since it opened in 1997, including being ranked in the Top Ten New Public Golf Courses by Golf Digest Magazine, winner of the Colorado PGA Merchandiser of the Year Award as well as top rakings by local industry publications. Additionally, the course has been the host of many prestigious tournaments, including the Colorado Open, the National Association of Disabled American Golfers, The Colorado Golf Association (CGA) Public Links Championship, The Colorado Womens Golf Association (CWGA) Mashie Tournament and will host this years CGA Stroke Play Championship.
Saddle Rocks 2001 green fees are $30 for Aurora Residents, $32 for Non-Residents during the week and $40 for golfers on the weekends.
