CASTLE ROCK, CO -- The Colorado PGA, Colorado Golf Association and
the University of Colorado Foundation will present the first Colorado
Senior Open Championship this weekend at the Plum Creek Golf and Country
Club.
The event, sponsored by Information Handling Systems, is set for September 10-12. It consists of a Pro-Am event on Friday, followed by a 36-hole championship. Dale Douglass, a former 1986 U.S. Senior Open Champion and former C.U. Buff golfer, will be playing along with former Colorado Open champs Bill Johnston and Bob Betley. Douglass, who has pocketed more than $5.9 million while playing on the Senior Tour, has 11 career victories. He finished second in this years Coldwell Banker Burnet Classic and has three Top 10 finishes in 1999. Betley, the Colorado Open champ in 1990, has won more than $1 million on the senior tour and one tour victory. Other Senior Tour players scheduled to play are Howie Johnson, Joe Jiminez, George Bayer, Dan Pastorini and Jim Holtgrieve. The $50,000 IHS Colorado Senior Open is the newest golf event in Colorado, making it one of the only states in the USA to offer championships in mens, womens and seniors tournaments. As part of this partnership the Colorado Section will receive 24 exemptions for the championship which will be made available to eligible Section Seniors based on their standing on the Playing Performance Point List. Non-exempt players will have the chance to qualify locally or at a regional qualifier which is planned for either southern California, Arizona or Nevada to draw other quality senior players from the Rocky Mountain region.
Like the FDC Colorado Open, the Colorado Senior Open will benefit
the C.U. Cancer Center. Daily tickets for the tourney are $5 at
the gate and proceeds go to support research and treatment for prostate
cancer.
