Buffs Close Fall
Season on High Note:
Finish Fifth at the Nelson

STANFORD, Calif.- The University of Colorado men's golf team finished the fall portion on a high note, finishing fifth Stanford's prestigious tournament, "The Nelson," defeating six ranked teams in the process.

Host and No. 10 Stanford rallied for the win, as the Cardinal edged No. 20 Fresno State by one shot. Stanford used the second best round of the day to finish with an 847 total. Colorado moved up from seventh into fifth, as the Buffs had the fifth best round of the day to close at 859.

CU was in position to record the best round of the day, but lost eight strokes over the final three holes and missed out on a possible third place finish.

But that fact didn't dampen what his team accomplished here or over the course of the fall, as Coach Mark Simpson's Buffaloes are poised to enter the nation's Top 25.

"It was somewhat disappointing today in the fact that we played the last three holes eight over par, but all-in-all, we still had a good day and it was a good way to end the fall part of our schedule," Simpson said. "We beat a lot of quality teams here, and this should give us some pretty good momentum heading into the spring. I was very satisfied with what I saw from this team this fall.

Tulsa's Martin Maritz led from start-to-finish, as he shot a 68 Sunday for a seven-under par 203 total, winning by one shot over Northwestern's Jess Daley (66-204). CU junior Matt Call tied for fourth with a 69-71-70-210 scorecard on the 6,756-yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Club course layout, as the U.S. Open participant turned in his best performance of the fall. Sophomore Matthew Zions also shot a 70 on Sunday and tied for 13th (70-212).

"The guys know we need to step it up if we want to be in the top 10 in the country," Simpson added. "That's a very confident statement, but the guys know that we hung in right there with the best teams in the nation for five competitions. And considering the youth of this team, it was a very successful fall, in my opinion."

Colorado has now concluded its fall schedule and will resume play next February. CU will likely crack the nation's Top 50 if not considerably higher after fall performances that included a tournament win and four top 5 finishes.
