BUFF GOLFERS
WIN CSU INTERCOLLEGIATE

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Colorado men's golf team was declared the winner of the Colorado State University Intercollegiate here Tuesday, as the surprise early snowstorm along the front range of the Rocky Mountain forced the cancellation of the tournament's final round.

The Buffaloes put up a 561 score for two rounds, which was one over par and good enough to defeat host CSU by 10 strokes.

Texas-Arlington finished third (575), followed by Michigan State (579) and Hawai'i (581). CU easily defeated district rivals Nebraska (599) and Iowa State (607), which finished 12th and 13th, respectively.

"In reality, I wanted to see how the team would respond with a lead," head coach Mark Simpson said, "So it was a little bit disappointing to have the final round cancelled. Winning the tournament is a big plus for our program, but on the other hand, it would have been nice for the guys to have the experience of playing 18 holes with the lead, simply from an experience standpoint. There's definitely a mentality that you need to adjust to when you have the lead as opposed to chasing the lead."

CU freshman Tobias Forsgren, playing in his first collegiate event, was declared the medalist in a "card playoff," as determined by tournament officials through USGA procedures. He shot 72-66-138 on the 6,878-yard, par-70 Fort Collins Country Club layout, becoming the first player to win his first college event in CU's history, and probably just one of a handful to ever do it in NCAA Division I.

"It's probably been done, but I certainly can't recall of it ever happening, at least while I've been a head coach," Simpson said. "He had an outstanding first meet, and that kind of play can inspire the entire team." Forsgren, from Sweden, was tied with UTA's Thomas Pye (68-70).

A pair of CU freshmen from Australia also posted top three finishes. Kane Webber (69-72-141), also playing his first collegiate meet, and Stephen Carroll (73-68-141), in just his second meet, both tied for third. Senior Ben Fiala tied for 10th with a 74-69-143 scorecard.

CU won its first tournament since last spring's Southwest Classic in Victoria, Texas, with the win by Forsgren the first by a Buff since 1995, when Mike Troyer won the The Maxwell in Edmond, Okla.
