Colorado
Men Finish
Seventh at Tucker Invitational
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of
Colorado men's golf team finished seventh here this weekend in the
45th annual William H. Tucker Invitational, as the Buffaloes continued
their sold early season play this fall season.
No. 11 Brigham Young won the title with an 856 team score, defeating Southern Cal (866) by 10 strokes. Colorado, which posted the third best final round score, placed seventh with an 883 total, just three shots out of a top five finish. The Buffaloes are on the verge of cracking the nation's Top 50 in the national polls, and defeated two ranked teams here, No. 12 Texas (by six shots) and No. 24 Texas Christian (by 14 strokes). Colorado State's Nigel Spence was the individual winner, as his eight-under-par 70-68-70-208 scorecard was good for a two stroke win over UNLV's Jeremy Anderson. CU freshman Stephen Carroll tied for 16th with a 71-71-76-218 effort on the 7,253-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course layout. "Overall, I was pleased with the performance of the guys," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "Albuquerque's always a pretty good test for us. The tourney always has a good field, it's a long course, and a very good challenge. We really had it going in the second and third round, and were about five strokes under par with just four or five holes to play both days, but we let a few shots slip away. A third place finish could have been possible here, but we're a young team and we'll learn how to overcome that. It was a good experience for them." The Buffs are in competition again on Oct. 11-12, when they will play in the Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate in St. Charles, Mo. Several Big 12 teams will be participating, and it will give the Buffs a good early indication of where they stack up in the conference.
